The World Urban Forum centres around dialogues. The aim is to provide an open forum for
debate and discussion for everyone from government offi cials and mayors to academics and
slum dwellers. Simply stated, the World Urban Forum is a think tank that does away with the
formal rules of procedure which usually govern offi cial UN meetings.
At the Second World Urban Forum there were nine dialogues that were divided into two distinct
clusters: Partners’ Dialogues & Thematic Dialogues. There was also written a tenth paper
concerning gender issues, which are cross cutting and therefore included in all dialogues.
The Partners’ Dialogues covered issues concerning Urban Cultures, Urban Realities, Urban
Governance and Urban Renaissance.
The Thematic Dialogues covered issues concerning Urban Poor, Urban Resources, Urban
Sustainability, Urban Services and Urban Disaster and Reconstruction.
