UN-HABITAT Executive Director awarded honorary Doctorate of Science at University College London
September 10, 2003: - UN-HABITAT Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka and two Nobel Prize laureates, Professor Daniel McFadden and Professor Dr. Erwin Neher, were awarded honorary Doctorate of Science degrees on Tuesday by the prestigious University College London.

Senior German official meets UN-HABITAT's Executive Director
May 2, 2003: UN-HABITAT's Executive Director Anna Tibaijuka
on Friday briefed a special envoy of the German Chancellor Helmut
Schroeder on the eve of the agency 19th Governing Council. The German
envoy, Uschi Eid, is Schroeder's G-8 Africa Action Plan representative.
Officials said they discussed the New Partnership for Africa's Development
(NEPAD) of which UN-HABITAT's Water for African Cities Programme is
a key component, and other related issues. |

Africa’s struggle for food security

April 11, 2003 -
The second Pan-African Congress on Food Security, Trade and Sustainable
Development , opened at UN-HABITAT in Nairobi this week with delegates
expressing deep concern at Africa’s food security situation. “Africa
remains the most food deficient continent and the predictions are
so grim, that unless radical measures are undertaken, starvation in
the continent will be much worse into the next decade than it is today,”
said Anna Tabaijuka, Executive Director of UN-HABITAT in her opening
remarks.

UN-HABITAT signs new
agreement at World Water Forum

March 9, 2003 - UN-HABITAT signed an agreement with the Asian
Development Bank (ADB) on Tuesday aimed at forging a new Water for
Asian Cities partnership. UN Under Secretary-General, Anna Tibaijuka,
Executive Director of UN-HABITAT and ADB President Tadao Chino signed
a Memorandum of Understanding for the new programme in Osaka. The
Japanese city this week is hosting the 3rd World Water Forum, the
largest ever meeting to discuss and seek solutions to the global water
crisis.

Plight of women in slums highlighted at International Women’s
Day awards ceremony

March 7, 2003 -
At the Woman of the Year award in Nairobi on 7 March, ten women were
honoured for their selflessness, courage and dedication to their communities.
Congratulating the winners and nominees for the awards, UN-HABITAT’s
Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka a key speaker at the occasion,
highlighted the burden of women in slums and shanty settlements where
percent of the city’s population live.

Tibaijuka calls for globalization to solve shelter problems of
local people

February 7, 2003 -
Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, Under Secretary-General of the UN, and the Executive
Director of UN-HABITAT stressed that there was a need to make globalization
work for local people, create decent jobs, and provide decent shelter
for the urban poor who are stranded in the slums and squatter settlements
surrounding the cities of Africa. Mrs. Tibaijuka was speaking as the
Chairperson of the second session, at the World Commission on the
Social Dimension of Globalization (WCSDG) held in Arusha, Tanzania,
from 6-7 February 2003.

UN-HABITAT gets US$15 million ESRI grant

February 5, 2003 - UN-HABITAT,
the UN agency responsible for helping governments address the problems
of human settlements and rapid urbanization, received a grant of US$
15,000,000 from the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI)
the leading developer of Geographic Information Systems software (GIS).

UN-HABITAT and UNEP working closely together

February 5, 2003 -
Anna Tibaijuka, Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, this week told the
22nd governing council of the United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP), UN-HABITAT’s sister organisation, that the two Nairobi-based
UN bodies would work with a “profound sense of common purpose” to
strengthen the nexus between the natural and human-made evironments
of the world.

Government of Kenya and UN-HABITAT to Upgrade Slums

January 16, 2003 -
Honourable Raila Odinga, the new Minister for Roads, Public works
and Housing and Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka, the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT,
signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the "Slum Upgrading Programme
for Kenya".
