THE YOUTH FORUM, 3-4 APRIL 2005

CONCEPT PAPER

A Youth Forum will be held 3-4 April 2005 at the United Nations Complex, Gigiri, Nairobi . This will be a working forum for youth to contribute to the Governing Council Agenda

Objectives

  • To create a forum for engagement for youth to the GC-20
  • To consolidate the youth agenda to the session
  • To encourage the participation of youth at the GC-20 session
  • To contribute to the finalization process of outlining working modalities for the youth advisory mechanism
  • To renew and strengthen youth involvement with the activities of the Garden of Remembrance
  • Up-date youth on progress made with regard to UN-HABITAT's on-going work

Activities  

  1. On-line discussions On-line discussions have been proposed on the Taking IT Global web-page http://groups.takingitglobal.org/UNHABITATyouthstrategy . Nominations for a committee to help advise UN-HABITAT's Executive Director on the formation of a youth consultative mechanism {This is part of the reccommendations given by youth discussing UN-HABITAT and Youth: Strategy for Youth Engagement } and consolidating the youth agenda to GC-20 will from part of the agenda. This is a proposal currently being advanced by youth from around the Globe on the Taking IT Global Web-page


  2. Round table dialogues These will take place a day prior to the main GC session. proposals received so far include
    • Consensus on working modalities for the youth consultative mechanism {To begin with on-line discussions }
    • Drawing strategies for youth engagement in the Global Partnership for Urban Youth in Africa { Several cities have already indicated their interest and commitment in the process. The Global Partnership Initiative was launched in Barcelona Spain, 13-17 September. See attached concept paper }
    • Consensus on the statement to be tabled at the main GC- 20 session

  3. Peace-pole revitalisation ceremony
    The Peace Pole is a six sided wooden pole, with the message, “ May Peace Prevail On Earth,” in six United Nations languages. On 4 February 2000, after the Nairobi and Dar Es Salaam bomb Blast, young people in Kenya led the inauguration ceremony of a Peace Pole at the Garden of Remembrance located at the United nations Complex, Nairobi , Kenya . Youth brought together ,the City Council of Nairobi, staff of both United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), UN- HABITAT, victims of the bomb attacks, civil society organizations and their peers. The garden of remembrance is dedicated all those who suffered loss. Since its inauguration, it has been a site for the raising of consciousness and call for peace. This is a proposal currently being advanced by Kenya National Council of Youth for Habitat
