Statistics
The designations employed and the presentation of the material
in this publication do not imply the expression of any opinion whatsoever
on the part of the Secretariat of the United Nations concerning the legal
status of any country, territory, city or area, or of its authorities,
or concerning the delimitation of its frontiers or boundaries.
The term "country" as used in this publication also refers, as appropriate,
to territories or area.
The designations "more developed" and "less developed" regions are intended
for statistical convenience and do not necessarily express a judgement
about the stage reached by a particular country or area in the development
process. (More developed regions comprise Northern America, Japan, Europe,
Australia-New Zealand. Less developed regions comprise Africa, Latin America,
Asia(excluding Japan), Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.)
TECHNICAL NOTES
General
Some data are desegregated into urban and rural. However, it should
be pointed out that rural and urban definitions vary from country to country.
Therefore, great care should be taken when statistical comparisons are
carried out considering a single definition of "urban and rural".

region and major area. "Urban" is defined in the national context (the
definitions of urban are generally the national definitions incorporated
in the latest available census).
Rural population [thousands]
Estimates and projections of the rural population for each country,
region and major area.
Urbanization level [%]
Estimates and projections of the percentage of population residing
in urban areas for each country, region and major area.
Household total number [thousands]
The concept of " household" is based on the arrangements made by persons
individually or in groups, for providing themselves with food or other
essentials for living. A household may be either (a) a one-person household,

they may be related or unrelated persons or a combination of both.
Household average size
Average household size refers to the average number of person per
household. This rate is obtained by dividing the total population by number
of households.

Average life expectancy for each sex.
Total population growth rate [%]
The average annual growth rate of the total population for each country,
region and major area.
Urban population growth rate [%]
The average annual growth rate of the urban population for each country,
region and major area.
Rural population growth rate [%]
The average annual growth rate of the rural population for each country,
region and major area.
Household number growth rate [%]
The average annual growth rate of the total number of households for
each country, region and major area.
Household 5-year increment [thousands]
The increment of total number of household for every 5 years.
Housing & social indicators

inquiry, used wholly for other purposes. A conventional dwelling may be
either occupied or vacant.
Housing units with piped water [%]
Percentage of occupied housing units with piped water. Piped water
refers to water provided within housing unit by pipe from community-wide
systems or from individual installations such as pressure tanks and pumps.
"With piped water" means water supply inside housing unit or outside housing
unit but within 100 meters from the door.

of any type refers to an installation arranged for humans to discharge

Percentage of population with access to sanitary facility for human
excreta disposal in the dwelling or located within a convenient distance
from the user's dwelling. It is important to note that "access, sanitary
facility, convenient distance" vary from country to country.
Space, infrastructure & economic indicators
Total area [1000ha]
Total area of the country, including area under inland water bodies.
Inland water bodies generally include major rivers and lakes.
Land area [1000ha]
Total area of the country, excluding area under inland water bodies.
Inland water bodies generally include major rivers and lakes. If land area
is not shown, the area under inland water bodies is included in the category
"Other land".
Population density [population per 1000 ha]
The ratio of the number of population to total area.
Arable land & land under permanent crop [ha/capita]
Arable land refers to land under temporary crops (double-cropped areas
are counted only once), temporary meadows for mowing or pasture, land under
market and kitchen gardens (including cultivation under protective cover)
and land temporarily fallow (less than five years). The abandoned land
resulting from shifting cultivation is not included in this category. Land
under permanent crops refers to land cultivated with crops that occupy
the land for long periods and need not be replanted after each harvest.
Permanent meadows & pasture [ha/capita]
Land used permanently (five years or more) for herbaceous forage crops,
either cultivated or growing wild (wild prairie or grazing land). The dividing
line between this category and the category "Forests and woodland" is rather
indefinite, especially in the case of shrubs, Savannah, etc., which may
have been reported either under one or the other of these two categories.
Forest & woodlands [ha/capita]
Land used natural or planted stands of trees, whether productive or
not, and includes land from which forests have been cleared but that will
be reforested in the foreseeable future, but it excludes woodland or forest

Other land [ha/capita]
Other land refers to any other land not specifically listed under
other land-use categories. It includes built-on areas, roads, barren land,
etc.
Consumption commercial energy per capita [giga-joules]
Commercial energy consumption includes solid, liquid, gaseous fuels
and primary electricity. Consumption refer to "apparent consumption" and
are derived from the formula "production + imports - exports - bunkers
+/- sock changes".
Railway network Density [km/1000km2]
The ratio of the total length of the railway network to total area.
Road network Density [km/1000km2]
The ratio of the total length of the road network to total area.
Motor Vehicle per 100 inhabitants [per 100 inhabitants]
The number of passenger cars per 100 inhabitants. Passenger cars includes

GNP per capita [US$]
Gross National Product per capita in US$.
These figures are calculated according to the World Bank Atlas method,
which is described below.
The Atlas conversion factor for any year is the average of a country's
exchange rate for that year and its exchange rates for the two preceding
years, after adjusting them for differences in relative inflation between
the country and USA. This three-year average smooths fluctuations in prices
and exchange rates for each country. The resulting GNP in U.S.dollars is
divided by the midyear population for the latest of three years to derive
GNP per capita.
Governments expenditure housing & community amenities [%]
Expenditure on housing and community amenities as a percent of total expenditure
of central government. Data relating to a fiscal year are presented within
the calendar year containing the greatest number of months for the fiscal
year. Fiscal years ending June 30 are presented within the same calendar
