Based on the experience acquired in the Essaouira Local Agenda 21 project , the Moroccan Government decided to replicate this project in major urban centres.

The cities of Marrakech , Meknes and Agadir were selected to be supported for the preparation of their Local Agendas 21.
The project aims at strengthening participatory processes for urban environmental planning and management. It will serve as a basis for improving related national policies and to establish tolls and training curricula.
Main activities of the Moroccan Local Agenda 21 National Programme are as follow:
- Supporting the cities of Marrakech , Meknes and Agadir in the preparation and implementation of their Local agenda 21
- Organising capacity building activities for NGOs and CBOs
- Organising capacity building activities for elected officials
- Adapting LA21 tools to the Moroccan context and developing LA21 training curricula

The programme has being extended to small urban centres in the Marrakech Tensift Al Haouz Region .
Other activities supported by the Morocco Local agenda 21
The Programme supported the launch of the UN-HABITAT Global Campaigns in Morocco which took place in Casablanca on 4 October. Specifically the Programme will contribute to the implementation of the campaign on Urban Governance.

Together with UNESCO, the Programme supports cultural heritage management of the Ksar Ait Benhaddou .
The Programme supports the Rabat NEPAD City Project through the preparation of the Rabat Profile within the framework of the NEPAD Sustainable City Programme.
