Inauguration of the Cuban National GEO/LA21 Office [November 2004]
The National GEO/LA21 Office in Cuba has been inaugurated on 26 November 2004. The Office is located within the Instituto de Planificación Física and is offering to the National GEO/LA21 Team, excellent working conditions to provide technical support to the four Cuban GEO/LA21 cities.

Capitalising Peruvian experience [October 2004]
A national workshop to capitalise Peruvian experiences on Local Agenda 21 was conducted from 20 to 22 October 2004. The Workshop will result in a publication to be produced in the first quarter of 2005. The experience of about 15 Peruvian cities was reviewed and analysed.

LA21 at the World Urban Forum II, Barcelona [September 2004]
The programme supported the preparation of a joint UNEP – UN-HABITAT dialogue on “Sustainable Urbanization”. This Dialogue was attended by about 300 participants and gave the opportunity for a very reach discussion.

Urban Environment Newsletter [August, 2004]
LA21 is contributing to a regular UN-HABITAT – UNEP newsletter “Urban Environment” to inform the respective partners about the development of the LA21 and Sustainable Cities programmes. The objective of this newsletter is not only to share experience within the programmes (i.e. between partners, field projects and offices), but also to emphasize the linkages between the programmes/projects, tools and methodologies used.

Bayamo , Cuba expends non-motorised transport [July 2004]
The Bayamo LA 21 Project is improving urban mobility in the city based on non-motorised transport. New horse-cart and bicy-taxi stations and routes were inaugurated in July 2004 providing access to public transport for all citizens.

“Alex 2003” Meeting report [June 2004]
The 2003 Global Meeting of the Localising Agenda 21 Programme (LA21) and the Sustainable Cities Programme (SCP) took place in Alexandria , Egypt , from 29 September to 02 October 2003. The meeting report is now available.

National LA21 Programme launched in Senegal [May 2004]
A national sensitisation workshop on Local Agenda 21 took place in Dakar, Senegal on 19 May 2004 as the launching event of the expansion of LA21 activities to four new cities: St Louis, Guediawaye, Tivaouane and Matam. These projects are replicating the Louga LA21 experience, which is still on going.

Strategy Consultations in Morocco [April - May 2004]
Strategies and action plans for the Local agendas 21 in Marrakech, Meknes and Agadir were debated in April and May 2004 during City Consultations that attracted an average of 500 participants.

National Programme launched in Cuba [February 2004]
LA21 activities in Cuba have been extended to three new cities: Cienfuegos , Holguin and Santa Clara . These projects are replicating the Bayamo Local Agenda 21 experience, which is still on going.

Agreement on a joint UN-HABITAT – UNEP strategy for LAC [January 2004]
A joint UN-HABITAT-UNEP Urban Environment Strategy for Latin America and the Caribbean has been agreed upon in January 2004. This joint strategy starts to be implemented in Cuba , Brazil and Peru .
