Africa

Kenya

In Kenya the LA21 Programme is supporting, since 1995, the city of Nakuru. A national LA21 Programme to replicate the Nakuru experience to other Kenyan cities is currently under preparation.

  • Nakuru LA21 Project
    The project involves: the implementation of a Strategic Structure Plan; strengthening the Town Planning Unit; resolving space-use conflicts around the bus park and market area; revitalising the Council’s rental housing stock; reinforcing community participation in solid waste management; and providing training to civic leaders.

Senegal

In Senegal the LA21 Programme is supporting, since 2001, the city of Louga. In May 2004 LA21 support has been extended to four new Senegalese cities.

  • Senegal National LA21 Programme
    The Senegal National LA21 Programme launched in May 2004 supports the replication of the Louga LA21 project experience in four cities: St Louis, Guediawaye, Tivaouane and Matam.

  • Louga LA21 Project
    The Louga Local Agenda 21 projects, initiated in 2001, address the following priority issues: (a) community based solid waste management, (b) improvement of urban mobility and (c) HIV/AIDS prevention

Arab States

Morocco

In Morocco, the LA21 Programme is supporting, since 1996, the city of Essaouira, this initial Demonstration Project has, since then, been replicated in several Moroccan cities.

  • Morocco National LA21 Programme
    Building on the experience acquired in the Essaouira Local Agenda 21 Project, the Government of Morocco decided to initiate a large National Replication Programme (Agendas 21 Locaux en milieu urbain MOR/99/00) since 2002 the Programme supports the preparation of Local Agendas 21 in the cities of Marrakech, Meknes and Agadir.

  • Marrakech Tensift Al Haouz Regional LA21 Project
    The project started at the beginning of 2004 supports initially the following urban centres of the Region: Chichaoua, Tahannaout, Ait Ourir, Kelaat Sraghna, Ben Guerir.

  • Essaouira LA21 Project
    Started in 1996, the Essaouira Local Agenda 21 projects is addressing the following priority issues: (a) cultural heritage management, (b) creating a green belt and an urban park (c) strengthening urban planning, and (d) rehabilitation and revitalisation of the Mellah neighbourhood.

  • Marrakech LA21 Project
    The project launched in 2002 is addressing the following issues: (a) sustainable water management, (b) cultural heritage management and promotion of tourism, and (c) access to urban services and social integration.

  • Ksar Ait Benhaddou
    Upon request of UNDP Morocco the LA21 National Programme is supporting a process to manage the cultural heritage of the Ksar Ait Benhaddou.

Asia

Viet Nam

In Vietnam, the LA21 Programme is supporting, since 1998, the city of Vinh. National replication activities are under preparation.

  • Vinh Local Agenda 21 Project
    The Vinh Local Agenda 21 projects, initiated in 1998, address the following priority issues: (a) revitalisation of the Quang Trung estate, (b) environmental upgrading of the Vinh market, (c) development of Lam River front, (d) community based waste management.

Latin America and the Caribbean

Joint UN-HABITAT – UNEP Urban Environment Strategy for Latin America and the Caribbean

A joint UN-HABITAT-UNEP Urban Environment Strategy for Latin America and the Caribbean has been agreed upon in January 2004. This joint strategy starts to be implemented in Cuba, Brazil and Peru.

Brazil

Brazil National Programme

The National Programme supports the municipalities of Maraba, Quirinopolis, Beberibe, Itapisuma. This Programme is jointly supported by UN-HABITAT and UNEP.

Cuba

The LA21 Programme supports since 2001 the city of Bayamo . From 2004, support has been extended to three new cities.

  • Cuba National Programme
    Building on the experience acquired in the Bayamo Local Agenda 21 Project, the Government of Cuba decided in 2004 to initiate a large National Replication Programme supporting the preparation of Local Agendas 21 in the cities of Cienfuegos , Santa Clara and Holguin . This Programme is jointly supported by UN-HABITAT and UNEP.

  • Bayamo
    The Bayamo Local Agenda 21 Project was launched at the end of 2001. The project is addressing the following priority issues: (a) deficient system of collection and recycling of solid waste, (b) degradation of the river that limit its uses, (c) insufficient urban transport service, and (d) insufficient public spaces in some of the neighbourhoods.

Peru

  • Arequipa
    The GEO Arequipa Report supported by UNEP is being finalised. The report will allow identifying priority issues that will be addressed by the Project.
