Abstract: A general handbook which presents four case studies demonstrating the advantages and problems of different approaches to cooperative housing. Two examples are taken from Africa, and one each from Asia and Latin America. The experiences include a wide range of shelf-help solutions to housing and describes a number of institutional forms, management approaches, and financial arrangements.

Abstract: A review of current and potential contributions of cooperatives to shelter development in Eastern and Southern Africa. Based on studies in Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe, the report also reviews the structure and organization of housing cooperatives; the legislative, regulatory and support environment for cooperative shelter development; the various sources of finance for cooperative shelter, and the role of donor support. It concludes by focusing on the importance of an appropriate policy climate, the need for effective support institutions, the essential role of the savings and credit movement and the need for partnerships between various stakeholders.

Abstract: Summary of the Colloquium deliberations, which were focused around three main objectives, e.g. to stimulate development of the cooperative approach in the housing sector by: a) Facilitating exchange of information and experience regarding the cooperative approach in the housing sector; b) Understanding the challenges and possibilities that exist within the cooperative approach in different countries; and c) Improving co-ordination and collaboration between stakeholders in the cooperative housing sector, to encourage the development of joint activities. The report also contains the full text of the statements and papers presented at the Colloquium.
