Activities in 2002-2005

The activities under the first phase of the Programme are aimed at promoting understanding and awareness of housing rights. They are designed to consolidate and build upon the ongoing activities of the two United Nations agencies in the area of housing rights, and to further strengthen the link with the United Nations human rights mechanisms. Some of the ongoing/forthcoming activities under the UNHRP thus include the following:

  • Establishment of networks among government institutions, NGOs and civil society groups on housing rights, women’s organizations, research and academic institutions working on housing rights issues and national human rights institutions.
  • Development of a global monitoring and evaluation mechanism and indicators to enable stakeholders to assess the status and progress in the full and progressive realisation of housing rights at various levels.
  • Joint publications - such as Housing Rights Legislation which was published in 2002. Three supportive compilations of legal material are also made available electronically on the web-site, namely: International Instruments on Housing Rights; National Housing Rights Legislation; Compilation of Selected Adjudication on Housing Rights.
  • Establishment of a specific section for UNHRP under the web-sites of UN-HABITAT and OHCHR, which will facilitate access to and exchange and dissemination of information.
  • Regional consultations, mobilising also the capacity of the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing.
