5th International Conference on Seismology and Earthquake Engineering
14-16 May, 2007 Tehran, Iran |
|
The Bam, Sumatra and Mozafarabad earthquakes provided a unique window of opportunity to raise international awareness of the importance of the effective implementation of a comprehensive earthquake risk reduction program in Iran as well as hazard-prone developing countries. It gives a challenge to the governments to make the highest use of the existing know-how on earthquakes and its integration into development programs. It also compels the scientific and engineering community to provide more socio-economic-cultural compatible solutions to national needs. Moreover, the public at large should become more concerned about the hazard and increase its own preparedness level.
In this connection and to pursue the objectives and mission of the “Open Alliance of UNESCO-UNDP-UN/ISDR-IIEES, on Earthquake Risk Reduction in Developing Countries”, IIEES is proud to announce its Fifth International Conference on Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (SEE-5) in providing a forum for scientific discussion on the above subjects to be convened in Tehran, Iran from 14-16 May 2007.
Topics to be addressed include Seismotectonic, Seismology, Earthquake Prediction, Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering, Structural Earthquake Engineering, Public Awareness and Risk Management.
This gathering will bring together professionals from a broad range of disciplines committed to reducing the impact of earthquakes on the built environment.
Your participation in the conference will provide an opportunity to exchange ideas on various subjects and the benefit of visiting the most memorizing cultural and earthquake effected sites in Iran. |

RECENT EVENTS
EXPERT GROUP MEETING ON RISK AND HUMAN SETTLEMENTS,
7-9 SEPTEMBER, MADRID, SPAIN
A second World Conference on Disaster Reduction, following the first one held
in Yokohama
in 1994, is planned to be held in Kobe-Hyogo, Japan, in January 2005. Several
thematic and regional consultations to review achievements and good practices,
gaps and critical areas that need to be further addressed in relation to reducing
risk to natural hazards will take place during 2003 and 2004.
As part of this preparatory process UN-ISDR has requested UN-HABITAT to take
the lead in organizing an international consultation in the form of a meeting
to review urban risk management practices and policies. The aim of the meeting
will be to bring together international, regional and local initiatives and
programmes in this area to draw lessons and discuss targets and needed action
for the future.
The Expert Group Meeting on Risk and Human Settlements will take place in Madrid
during the second week of September 2004, one week prior to the UN-HABITAT’s
second session of the World Urban Forum that takes place from 13-17 September
in Barcelona. The EGM will, therefore, act also as a lead up towards the WUFII
as it is anticipated that selected participants from the Madrid Conference will
take part in the WUFII events.

SECOND SESSION OF UN-HABITAT'S WORLD URBAN FORUM, 13-17 SEPTEMBER 2004, BARCELONA, SPAIN
The Spanish city of Barcelona is preparing to receive some 3,000 delegates
from governments, local authorities, grass roots organizations, NGOs, planners,
architects and experts on urban issues from around the world for the second
gathering of UN-HABITAT’s World Urban Forum 13-17 September 2004. Held
every two years, the forum is a key event on the international calendar, a new
ground-breaking global initiative to address and keep abreast of the main challenge
of the rapidly urbanizing world in the new millennium. The overall theme for
the World Urban Forum II is "Cities: crossroads of cultures, inclusiveness
and integration". This focus will enable a number of hopefully
stimulating dialogues to take place on the challenges posed by globalization
and urbanization.

In formation
UN-HABITAT’s Disaster Management Programme (DMP) is responsible for one
of the dialogues: Mobilizing Sustainable Relief Efforts in Disaster/Post-conflict
Environments: transforming disasters into opportunities for development".From
this perspective, the WUF II provides an opportunity to bring together an array
of experts and representatives to weigh and discuss pertinent issues relating
to current disaster management practices in the global context. Three Networking
Events will precede the main dialogue, culminating in consensus building during
the final plenary of the dialogue. Networking Events One, Two and Three will
explore and challenge the roles and responsibilities of NGO/Civil Society, Governments
(national and local), and the United Nations/partner agencies, respectively,
in relation to disaster management and human settlements.

WORLD CONFERENCE ON DISASTER REDUCTION,
18-22 JANUARY 2005 KOBE, HYOGO, JAPAN
The Yokohama Strategy and Plan of Action for a Safer World were adopted at
the Yokohama
conference on Disaster Reduction in May 1994. Ten years on, a major international
event is being planned to assess the progress made against the plan of action
from Yokohama. The event will be a platform for the presentation and adoption
of specific goals, activities and policy measures, based on a review of the
progress since Yokohama. This conference is of particular importance, as the
commitment to and understanding of disaster management has been moving forward
internationally, impacts of disasters continue to rise and remain a major obstacle
to development. This recognition is of special resonance within the DMP, as
it highlights the connections between relief and development and the need to
devise new strategies for addressing this gap. Based on its close partnership
with UNISDR, DMP/UN-HABITAT will play a leading role in the conference in Kobe
in 2005.
