Safer Cities in Africa

Safer Cities projects have been undertaken in a number of cities in Africa over the past five years with the technical support of UN-HABITAT and financial assistance from various agencies. Safer Cities projects now include Johannesburg and Durban in South Africa, Nairobi in Kenya, Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Abidjan in Ivory Coast, Antananarivo in Madagascar, Yaounde and Douala in Cameroon, and Bamako in Mali.

Specific tools such as victimisation surveys, safety audits for women, and training courses have been developed to support local level community safety partnerships and activities. Safer Cities projects also use visits, study tours, and seminars to facilitate the exchange of experiences and expertise among cities.

In fact, the stimulus for the eThekwini/Durban International Conference came from a study tour of the City of Durban arranged for the Mayors and local authorities of Dar es Salaam and Nairobi. During this visit it was proposed that eThekwini Municipality could host a follow-up event to the Johannesburg International Conference on Crime Prevention Partnerships to Build Community Safety that took place in 1998. eThekwini was considered to be an ideal location given the success of its Safer Cities project and its strong commitment to municipal safety and crime prevention.
