 The World Water Forum is an initiative of the World Water Council which has the aim of raising the awareness on water issues all over the world. As the main international event on water, it seeks to enable multi-stakeholder participation and dialogue to influence water policy making at a global level, thus assuring better living standards for people all over the world and a more responsible social behaviour towards water issues in-line with the pursuit of sustainable development. This fourth session is being hosted by the Government of Mexico.
UN-HABITAT is one of the UN agencies involved in the organization of the Fourth World Water Forum together with other members of the United Nations Millennium Development Task Force on Water Supply and Sanitation. UN-HABITAT will coordinate topic sessions and events on the theme of Water Supply and Sanitation for All.
More specifically, UN-HABITAT will host a special event at World Water Forum entitled Delivering the Millennium Development Goals in three years: Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Initiative – A model setting regional initiative. The meeting will take place on 19th March 2006 from 11:00 – 13:00 hours at Centro Banamex, Valparaiso 2-3.
The agency will also launch its 2006 Global Report on Water and Sanitation: Achieving the Millennium Development Goals in small urban centres. The report aims at helping governments and international organizations meet MDG targets for water supply and sanitation in small urban centres where one billion of the world’s population who lack adequate provision for water live.
With the wealth of experience and information gained from its Water for African Cities Programme, Water for Asian Cities Programme, and the Lake Victoria Water and Sanitation Initiative, UN-HABITAT is well placed to identify “local actions” from each of these regional programmes for discussion during the Mexico Forum.
The World Water Fora are built on the knowledge, experience and input of different types of organizations active in the global water polity. It is a venture founded on the principles of collaboration, partnership and innovation.
