Involving women in improving water and sanitation
Sunday 19 March, 16:30 – 18:30
Women and girls are disproportionately affected by inadequate access to water supply and sanitation services, and can make an important contribution to the design and management of effective water and sanitation facilities. The session on Safe, accessible, private and nearby: Involving women in improving water and sanitation – the key to meeting the MDGs, will identify and highlight what countries need to do to ensure that national policies and institutions for water supply and sanitation service delivery respond equally to the different roles, needs, and priorities of women and men. The meeting provides an opportunity to discuss a variety of local initiatives that have addressed these issues and gather “how-to” lessons learned. These lessons can be used to guide the formulation of strategies and provide specific and practical ways to translate the water community’s rhetorical commitment to gender mainstreaming into consistent action on the ground.
Making a difference in slums and low income settlements: Towards achieving the MDGs in Water and Sanitation
The session will highlight community level experiences that demonstrate practical ways to achieve the Millennium Development Goals relating to water and sanitation through national and local government policies. It will draw on the considerable body of international experiences from slums and low income settlements.
